Status report of ratites in captivity in Germany

Data collected between March 18th and April 27th, 1992

A total of 186 institutions (148) and private individuals (38) were telephoned and telefaxed about their ratite stock. Of these, 113 did have birds,68 did not and 5 were unable to be contacted, not even replying to a subsequent letter with a pre-paid reply.

Total cost of sample, no wages were calculated, was DM 506.30/£171.63

Eighty-four zoos (74% of the positive replies) possess 630 ratites, 76% of the total stock. The twenty-nine private individuals (26%) had 203 birds, 24%.of the total stock.

Of the 51 zoos (6 Aquariums were not approached) listed as being in Germany by the International Zoo Yearbook No. 28, and used by ISIS for it's sampling, 41 (36% of those with birds) have 362 ratites, 43% of the total stock.

64% of those replying with stock are not sampled by ISIS and 57% of the total stock is therefore not recorded.
